Deshawna (she/her) is a Yoga Instructor and Trauma-Informed Social Worker & Therapist based in Toronto, Ontario. She has worked in the community for many years doing advocacy work around mental health and wellness within the Black community, and she is committed to diversifying the field of mental health. In the past few years she has worked with Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (BIPOC) youth as well as womxn in community and social justice spaces. Being a Black womxn, and also a Yoga Instructor and Social Worker, she was able to see the need for diversity in practitioners that could respond to the culturally specific needs of Black people. In response to this, she created Black Lotus Mental Wellness. In doing this, she identifies and creates interventions that address intergenerational trauma in BIPOC communities, and opportunities for mental wellness and healing. She recognizes that trauma manifests itself within the physical body which often leads to mental and emotional illnesses and her practice as a Therapist, Social Worker and Yoga Instructor reflects this.
